Course Content

For decades, humankind has been extracting oil and gas at sea as a source of energy and other products. In this two-day course participants will learn the basics of the offshore oil and gas industry. They will gain insight into the complete offshore playing field, from technical engineering aspects to political and societal context. Therefore, learning to speak a common language and understanding the basics of this industry is of great importance for anyone working in this sector. By means of theoretically solid but not excessively detailed lectures, participants will learn to understand the different aspects behind recent oil and gas projects. In inspiring cases this theoretical knowledge will be put into practice.

This course and its material are written and given entirely in English, however if all participants are Dutch, it is possible to give the lectures in Dutch.

Target audience

This course has been developed for engineers who are new to the oil and gas industry and non-technical professionals who are working in or with clients from this industry. For example, professionals from a banking, insurance and environmental background.

Learning Objectives

  • Gaining insight into the lifecycle of oil and gas production facilities
  • Understanding the process of formation, extracting and processing oil and gas in a typical field
  • Attaining knowledge about the technical aspects of the design, installation and operation of an oil and gas project
  • Comprehending the complete offshore playing field from technical engineering aspects to the political and societal context

Day 1

The day will begin with an introduction to the history of the offshore oil and gas industry. Additionally, the influence of relevant economical and societal factors for the sector will be discussed. Next, the manner in which oil and gas is formed and extracted will be explained, in order to clarify the process of reservoir engineering, which will be subsequently explained. A development case will provide more insight into this process. After the lunch, loading issues in an offshore environment will be addressed, after which participants will create and test a bottom founded structure during a practical case in our lab. Finally, the types, characteristics and design choices of bottom founded structures will be presented.

Day 2

Health, safety and environment are crucial topics in any oil and gas project and will be the starting point of the second day. Next, the types, characteristics and design choices regarding floating structures, topsides and processing modules will be explained. This will be put into practice when designing a topside on a floating structure in the following hands-on case. The course will continue with an overview of the fabrication, transportation, installation and decommissioning techniques. Upcoming innovations and trends will also be presented. The day will end with a field development game in which the gained knowledge will be applied. Hereafter, an exam will be given to test the knowledge acquired.
